Gemini app now previews and edits generated files inside the chat
Files generated in a Gemini app chat can be previewed, expanded to full screen and edited in place, with PDFs working on web and mobile.

The Gemini app now lets users preview and edit a generated file inside the chat, without leaving the conversation.
Google announced the change in a Workspace Updates post on Oct. 29, 2026. Users can expand a file to full screen and type edits directly, highlight text to ask Gemini a question about it, or have Gemini refine it.
PDFs Work on Web and Mobile, Everything Else on Web Only
PDF preview and editing works on both web and mobile. Documents, spreadsheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files and code work on the web only.
An April 27, 2026 post from Google had already announced file generation in Gemini, producing a file from a prompt in formats including Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDF, .docx, .xlsx, CSV, LaTeX, TXT, RTF and Markdown. This update adds preview and editing in the chat.
Slide Decks, Sheets and Documents Each Get a Handoff
For slide decks, Gemini shows the layout in the chat. The user can edit it directly or ask Gemini to adjust tone and structure, then open it in Google Slides or download it as PPTX or PDF.
For Google Sheets, Gemini can generate trackers, tables and data models from a prompt. The user previews the result and opens it in Sheets.
For documents and PDFs, Gemini can draft PDFs, Google Docs, LaTeX, Markdown or TXT files. Users make manual or prompted edits inline on web or in full-screen view, and can upload all of them to Drive.
Every Workspace and Personal Account Gets It
The feature is available to all users in all languages where the Gemini app is available. That covers all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers and personal Google accounts. Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains have it now. Google said there is no admin control, and users of all ages with Gemini app access can generate files.
Our View
We think the platform split decides how useful this is. Editing in the chat works for PDFs on web and mobile, and every other file type works on the web only.
On a phone, then, a deck or a tracker generated in Gemini cannot be edited in the chat, and only a PDF can. On the web, the handoffs change the routine. A deck drafted in Gemini can get its wording and structure fixed in the chat, and Slides opens only when the deck needs the full editor. A tracker works the same way with Sheets. Small changes no longer require opening another app.
That saving depends on where the drafting happens. It reaches people who work in Gemini on the web, and phone users get it only for PDFs.
