Gemini's Windows app overlays any window with Alt+Space
Google's Gemini app for Windows launched Sept. 11, 2026, on by default for enabled organizations, with an Alt+Space overlay and Gmail and Drive summaries.
Google launched the Gemini desktop app for Windows 10 and 11 on Sept. 11, 2026, the company said in a post on the Workspace Updates blog dated the same day. The app is designed to run alongside other apps on the desktop, offering “instant assistance without disrupting their workflows,” Google said.
An Alt + Space keyboard shortcut brings Gemini up over whatever a user is already working in, according to the post, citing “fact-checking a document or brainstorming presentation titles” as examples.
What the app does
From the desktop app, users can ask Gemini to draft project summaries using information pulled directly from Gmail and Google Drive, Google said. The app also lets users generate custom images with Nano Banana, Google’s image-generation model, without leaving the app, per the announcement.
Google described the release as a starting point rather than a finished feature set: “This launch marks the beginning of Gemini app’s native desktop capabilities for Windows, with more features planned to roll out over time,” the company said.
A general release, not a preview
This is a full rollout rather than a limited test. The feature is “ON by default for all organizations with Gemini enabled,” governed by the existing Generative AI settings in the Workspace Admin console, with no separate end-user setting, Google said. It is available to all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers and users with personal Google accounts, and it is rolling out to both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, according to the post. The app can be downloaded now at gemini.google/desktop, Google said.
Analysis
The detail that matters most here is how the app arrives: on by default, for every enrolled organization, through a setting that already existed rather than a new one an admin has to find and flip. A keyboard shortcut that surfaces Gmail and Drive content over any open window is now live on Windows machines across Workspace accounts without a separate rollout decision at most organizations.
Google named exactly two capabilities at launch, drafting from Gmail and Drive and generating images with Nano Banana, and said itself that more is planned. What ships next will say more about the strategy than this launch does on its own.
