Google delays Workspace skills but starts the Gemini app rollout

Google said Oct. 13, 2026, that skills in Workspace are delayed until further notice, while skills in the Gemini app roll out through mid-November.

A wooden card box with its lid open holds a stack of white index cards with orange, blue and purple labels, while a large white card with a pink center and two smaller cards float above it, against a blue background patterned with green circles and orange half-moons.

Google has delayed the launch of skills in Google Workspace until further notice, while skills in the Gemini app begin rolling out, the company said on the Workspace Updates blog.

The post is dated Oct. 13, 2026. Google had said Rapid Release domains would finish getting Workspace skills by Oct. 12 and Scheduled Release domains would start Oct. 19. It said it is working to ensure skills in Workspace launch “in a safe and reliable manner” and will share an updated timeline as soon as it is confirmed.

Gemini App Skills Finish Rolling Out by Mid-November

Google started a gradual rollout of skills in the Gemini app on Oct. 13 for Rapid Release and Scheduled Release Workspace domains, with completion expected by mid-November. The app’s skills are open to all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google accounts, of all ages. Admins get no controls for them.

Google will add the ability to share Gemini app skills and an integration with Google Drive in the coming weeks. It said it will post on the Workspace Updates blog when those start rolling out.

Workspace Skills Have No Date

Google’s Sept. 30 announcement of skills now carries an Oct. 13 update: “The launch of skills in Workspace is currently delayed. We’ll publish a post when the rollout resumes.”

Workspace skills are limited to users over 18 on Business Starter, Standard and Plus; Enterprise Starter, Standard and Plus; the Google AI Pro for Education add-on; and the AI Expanded Access add-on. Google has a Help Center page on admin controls for skills in Workspace.

Our View

We start from one fact in the Sept. 30 post: skills do not sync between the Gemini app and Workspace apps. A skill used in both must be created separately in each. Business and enterprise customers who build a skill in the Gemini app now will have to build it again in Workspace when the rollout resumes. Their Gems keep working in the meantime. Google said Gems move to the Settings panel of the Gemini app on Nov. 17, 2026, and end no sooner than March 1, 2027. Building twice costs little only if Workspace skills resume well before that date.
