Gmail search's AI Overviews go global, but paid plans only

Google said Sept. 15, 2026, it is expanding AI Overviews in Gmail search beyond the US to global users on paid plans with English set as their Gmail language.

Google is expanding AI Overviews in Gmail search to users worldwide on paid plans, ending a limit that had confined the feature to English-language users in the US, Google said in a post on the Workspace Updates blog.

What it does

Google’s post is dated Sept. 15, 2026. AI Overviews lets a user ask natural-language questions in Gmail’s search bar and get concise summaries and answers without digging through individual emails, Google said. The feature now reaches paid-plan users globally, provided their Gmail language is set to English; it had previously been available only to users in the US with English set as their language, according to the post.

Rollout

The rollout is staged. For Rapid Release domains, a gradual rollout of up to 15 days for feature visibility started Sept. 3, 2026, Google said. For Scheduled Release domains, a full rollout of one to three days for feature visibility starts Sept. 21, 2026, according to the post. Personal Google Accounts got a gradual rollout starting Sept. 3, 2026, Google said.

Who’s eligible

The feature is available to Business Starter, Standard and Plus; Enterprise Starter, Standard and Plus; and Frontline Plus, according to the post. It also reaches consumers on Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra plans, though personal accounts in the EEA, UK, Switzerland and Japan are excluded, Google said. Google AI Pro for Education and the AI Expanded Access add-on round out the list, according to the post.

Default settings

For admins, the feature is on by default when Gemini for Workspace in Gmail and Workspace Intelligence access to Gmail are both enabled, Google said. For end users, it is on by default when “Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet” and “Google Workspace smart features” are turned on, according to the post.

Analysis

Google frames this as “expanding access,” not a launch, and its own language backs that up. The feature already existed, gated to one country and one language setting. What changed is the map.

Consumers on Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra get the feature globally, except personal accounts in the EEA, UK, Switzerland and Japan. Four of the world’s larger, wealthier markets are carved out of a consumer rollout that otherwise reads as global, and the post does not say why.

The staggered dates show where Google’s priorities sit. Personal accounts and Rapid Release domains started rolling out Sept. 3, 2026, nearly three weeks before Scheduled Release domains begin Sept. 21, 2026. The administrators who move slowest get the feature last.
