Google Meet now drafts follow-up emails and tasks after calls

Google Meet's post-meeting screen now offers next steps that draft a Gmail follow-up and add action items to Google Tasks.

A blue sphere with three black curved lines sits on a blue speakerphone-style base with a green button and two white knobs, surrounded by four curved gray and white tube arms, on a yellow background with pink zigzag shapes.

Google Meet can now draft a follow-up email and log action items in Google Tasks when a call ends, with one tap on the post-meeting screen. The feature, called next steps, runs on Gemini and Workspace Studio and is on by default.

Google announced next steps in an Oct. 12, 2026, Workspace Updates blog post. It said the feature automates repetitive post-meeting tasks inside Workspace.

Gmail and Tasks Get the First Steps

One step drafts a follow-up email in Gmail. The other adds action items to Google Tasks. Google said more are coming soon.

A Tap on the Post-Meeting Screen Turns a Step On

A section titled “Routines for this meeting” on the post-meeting screen lets a user enable a next step with one tap. It works for one-off and recurring meetings, and a user can switch a given step on across all meetings.

Next steps appear only if “Take notes for me” was enabled during the meeting. After a user turns a step on in Meet for the first time, the post-call screen and the Workspace Studio Flows library both manage it.

Admins Can Switch It Off by Group

Next steps are on by default. Admins can disable them at the domain, organizational unit or group level, through the Workspace Studio admin settings or the Take Notes for Me setting.

Rollout Began Oct. 5

Rollout to Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains began Oct. 5, 2026. Google said the rollout is extended. Feature visibility could take longer than 15 days.

Next steps are available on Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and the Google AI Pro for Education add-on.

Our View

We think the two steps available now matter less than the setup behind them. Next steps run through Workspace Studio’s Flows library, which means a meeting can now set off work in other Google apps. Today that is one email and one task list. Google said more steps are coming, and each one moves a meeting’s output a little further without a person handling it. For users, that saves real time, as long as the notes the whole chain depends on are right.
