Google Meet translates speech between any of 63 languages at once

Google Meet speech translation now covers 63 languages with automatic language detection, so a meeting no longer needs one fixed language pair.

Google Meet’s speech translation now covers 63 languages and detects which one each person is speaking, so a meeting no longer has to be set to one language pair. Participants can translate between any combination of the 63 in the same call.

Google announced the expansion in an Oct. 22, 2026, Workspace Updates blog post. The feature runs on Gemini 3.5 Live Translate and works on the web, Android and iOS. Meet hardware devices can listen to translated speech.

Meet Now Detects the Language Being Spoken

Automatic detection replaces the old fixed pair. Meet translates into each listener’s preferred language in near real time, even when several languages are spoken or a speaker switches mid-call. Captions are synchronized with the translated audio.

Each Participant Turns Translation On Alone

Each participant sets translation for themselves. A control in the meeting toolbar switches it on. Participants can also list other languages they understand. Meet leaves those untranslated. Translation is off at the start of every meeting.

Participants also choose whether their own speech is translated for others. Google said it does not store voice data or train models on voice.

Plan and Time Limits Depend on the Organizer

The organizer’s plan decides who can use translation and for how long. Guests from other domains get it when the organizer has an eligible Workspace or Google AI plan. Either person’s plan is enough in a one-on-one call.

Eligible base Workspace and Google AI Pro plans get up to 90 minutes per meeting. AI Expanded Access, AI Ultra Access and Google AI Ultra get up to 8 hours.

Google lists speech translation as available on Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, consumer Google AI Pro and Ultra, Frontline Plus, the Google AI Pro for Education add-on, and the AI Expanded Access and AI Ultra Access add-ons.

Some Meetings Are Excluded

Translation does not work in live streams, recordings, client-side encrypted meetings, dial-in or third-party interoperability calls, or with adaptive audio. Regional and age restrictions apply.

Conference-room hardware can play translated speech from remote participants, but speech that starts in the room is not translated for others.

Admins Can Turn It On or Off by Group

The feature is on by default for eligible Workspace editions when the Gemini for Meet admin setting is enabled. Admins can turn it on or off for an organizational unit or group under Apps, Google Workspace, Google Meet, Gemini settings in the Admin console.

Rollout Began Oct. 22

Rapid Release domains began a full rollout on Oct. 22, 2026, with visibility in one to three days. Scheduled Release domains start a gradual rollout of up to 15 days on Nov. 2, 2026. Feature visibility and synchronized captions may vary at first. Mobile users must update the Meet app.

Our View

We think the per-person setting matters more than the language count. Meet used to need one language pair for the whole meeting. Each participant now chooses translation for themselves. Any combination of the 63 languages can share a call. A participant who understands one speaker’s language can list it and hear that speaker directly. Translation is off when a meeting starts. Each participant has to switch it on. Guests from other domains depend on the organizer’s plan for access. That holds only while the plan is eligible and the meeting fits inside its time limit.
