Google Vault can now export Gemini conversations across Workspace
Google Vault supports filtered eDiscovery exports of Gemini in Workspace conversations, filtered by custodian and date range.

Legal and compliance teams can now pull Gemini in Workspace conversations out of Google Vault for eDiscovery. Google calls it a new data source for its AI compliance capabilities.
Google announced the filtered exports in a Workspace Updates post on Oct. 22, 2026. They cover conversations across Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides and Meet.
Admins Filter by Custodian and Date Range
An admin narrows an export by custodian, meaning specific user accounts or organizational units, up to 5,000 users. A date range with time zone selection narrows it further. The admin starts an export from the Search tab in Vault. The admin picks “Gemini in Workspace” from the service dropdown, enters the criteria and clicks Export. There is no end-user setting.
Exports Carry Prompts, Responses and Citations
Each export is a JSON file with user prompts, AI responses, generated attachments such as images, links to referenced Workspace files such as Drive documents and Gmail threads, and citations. Metadata tags align with the GenAI conversation format used in the Gemini app. Admins run exports from the Vault UI or API. API support for Vault API users arrives within 14 days of the UI rollout.
Rollout Reaches Rapid and Scheduled Release Domains
Google said the feature is available now to those domains. It requires the Vault add-on on Business Plus, Frontline Standard and Plus, Enterprise Essentials Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and Education Fundamentals, Standard and Plus. Retention rules and litigation holds for Gemini in Workspace will follow in future releases, Google said.
Our View
We think the detail that matters most is that exports cover only conversations created while conversation history is on. Vault can search a conversation only if the history setting allowed it to exist.
Admins set history and deletion rules by organizational unit in the Admin console. A unit with history off gives legal nothing to export. In a unit where users can delete conversations themselves, a conversation may be gone before an export runs. A unit with auto-deletion after inactivity loses idle conversations. An export run later finds only what remains.
Legal and compliance teams therefore depend on settings in place before an export is requested. Retention rules and litigation holds are still to come for Gemini in Workspace. The deletion settings are the controls an admin has now.
Employees in units with history on are using a tool whose prompts, responses and cited files a custodian filter can now pull into a legal export.
The export is only as complete as the history and deletion settings that were in place when the conversations happened.
