OpenAI will put visual ads beside ChatGPT image results
OpenAI is adding display ads next to images ChatGPT generates, starting in the U.S. with a test group of advertisers and a new set of measurement partners.

OpenAI is adding visual display ads to ChatGPT that appear alongside the images users ask it to generate.
OpenAI announced the format Oct. 5, 2026, according to TechCrunch and Yahoo Finance, which both reported what the company said in its announcement.
Ads start in the U.S. later in October
The ads begin appearing later this month in the U.S. only, featuring products and services from an initial test group of advertisers, TechCrunch’s Sarah Perez reported Oct. 5. Yahoo Finance’s Al Landes reported the same day that OpenAI has announced no global rollout date.
OpenAI said the ads are clearly labeled and will not influence ChatGPT’s answers, TechCrunch and Yahoo Finance reported. Yahoo Finance said they sit beside the generated image, separate from the image being created. The format is designed to show product inspiration, product use or experiences connected to a service, Yahoo Finance reported. Yahoo Finance also reported that OpenAI has not detailed ad size, placement frequency or how closely an ad relates to what the user is generating.
Ads exist to fund the free tiers
OpenAI introduced ads earlier this year to support its free and low-cost subscription tiers and expanded them to India in August, TechCrunch reported. TechCrunch said the aim is to win advertisers who want more visual imagery. It said the ads would eventually let them target ChatGPT’s 1.2 billion weekly users once they roll out globally.
TechCrunch’s own analysis was that the ads could disrupt the user experience and push casual users to pay for a subscription to avoid them. TechCrunch said the move follows the launch of Meta’s Muse, an agentic AI app that is free to everyone, which it called a growing competitor to chatbots like ChatGPT.
Attribution partners measure clicks
OpenAI is expanding its measurement tools and partners, TechCrunch and Yahoo Finance reported. Click attribution partners are AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin. Full-funnel measurement partners are Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL.
OpenAI also partnered with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic on geo-based experiments around ads, TechCrunch reported. Yahoo Finance said OpenAI describes that incrementality work as exploratory. Data integrations with Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp let advertisers send existing conversion data to ChatGPT Ads, Yahoo Finance reported.
Brand suitability checks are early pilots
OpenAI is developing brand suitability evaluation pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science to help advertisers understand the ChatGPT ads environment, TechCrunch and Yahoo Finance reported. Yahoo Finance said OpenAI frames them as early-stage pilots, with no finalized standards or independent validation results published.
Analysis
We think image generation suits ads. A person who asks for a picture is looking at the screen and waiting. An ad beside the result reaches them at that pause.
A lab that sells ads needs reach and proof. Reach is the 1.2 billion weekly users TechCrunch cited. Proof is what the attribution and measurement partners supply. Yahoo Finance said ChatGPT is assembling the components of a conventional digital advertising business, including measurement partners, attribution tools, brand-safety vendors and a visual format.
TechCrunch said the ads exist to support the free and low-cost tiers. A rival such as Meta offering a free app raises the stakes for how well that advertising works.
